In angiosperms, how do the sperm get to the part of the flower containing the egg?

The sperm, in the pollen, must reach the Gynoecium, where the sperm must travel to the ovary.

In angiosperms, how do the sperm get to the part of the flower containing the egg?
The pollen grains produce pollen tubes into the style. It is in the pollen tube that the two male gametes are present. The pollen tube reaches the ovary and pierces into the embryo sac. Then the male gameste are released and they fuse with the egg cell and secondary nucleus.

My daughter has to make a flower out of food, labeling different parts for school, i have no idea what to do?

how bout using different types of pasta...as it comes in so many different shapes. Also, using the leaves off broccoli or cauliflower as the leaves of the flower...Spices, different colours, can be the pollen - like curry powder...

My daughter has to make a flower out of food, labeling different parts for school, i have no idea what to do?
You use a radish or something colourful for the centre of the flower, peas in their pods for the sepals, something long and thin for the stem, maybe a tangle of bean sprouts for the root system
Reply:You can use marzipan and food colouring.

What kind of flower can I plant?

I live in the Mid Ohio Valley which I believe is zone 6. What kind of perennial plants can I plant in part shade that only gets about 2 hours of morning sun. I want a plant that is low mound that will flower most of the summer. Something that is only about a foot tall. I want a perennial plant so I don't have to plant every year. I need something that will bloom all summer. I will need several plants. Any ideas or am I out of luck?

Thanks

What kind of flower can I plant?
arrowhead ferns hate too much sun. nice fern also cold tollerant. can eventually grow to 3 feet, but will stay mainly a ground cover.

also dwarf bamboo is evergreen and wont grow over 2 feet. cold tolerant as well
Reply:Stella d'ora day lilly likes more light than that but will do ok in shade most of the day as long as it is not real deep shade. The plant has long narrow leaves, gets 12"-18" tall, stays in a mound, gets yellow flowers from June through October. I am in zone 5 and started with 6 plants I have divided and divided and have so many I have tried them everywhere and have not found a place they haven't survived.

Will do well in sun and/or shade and bloom most of the year

Are they bad for just your lawn or flower gardens too?i am putting in a new bed, side of my lawn, & found grubs

I tilled a corner part of my lawn to put ina new flower bed, and I found grubs. Are they going to be bad for my plants too or just grass? I am new at this if you can't tell. :)

Thanks for your help.

Are they bad for just your lawn or flower gardens too?i am putting in a new bed, side of my lawn, %26amp; found grubs
Grubs are bad for flowers and grass. They eat the roots from the bottom up. You need to treat the lawn and the flowerbed for these destructive little critters. Beneficial nematodes will take care of them, and any other predatory insect.

Reply:Your grass was doing fine before you found that it had grubs. In spite of all the talk, grubs do very little damage to either lawns or plants. I wouldn't get carried away trying to deal with a problem that you don't really have.

What part of the flower receives the pollen grain from the anther?

I believe it's the stigma and it travels down the style to the ovary. It's the male part "anther" that produces the pollen.

Why are the flower buds on my Hibiscus falling off before they bloom?

I bought a Hibiscus plant last year and this happened constantly. The new buds would form but before they would open (flower) the buds would fall off the stem. It was in a clay pot and even when I would get flowers they would fall off very quickly. I ended up transferring the plant to the ground and am waiting to see what happens. So far, so good, and I have one bloom about to open.

This year I bought 2 new Hibiscus plants and the same thing is happening. The buds just fall off the end of the stem before I see a flower. When I bought the plants they had at least 1 to 2 open flowers on each plant.

They are planted in large clay pots w/ potting soil, get watered every 2-3 days, get full sun in morning and part of the afternoon and get fertilizer as required.

Are the pots too small, not enough soil? (I have put them in larger pots and than they came in when purchased), Wrong fertilizer? (It says for flowering plants like Hibiscus), Too much/not enough water? Wrong type of soil?

Why are the flower buds on my Hibiscus falling off before they bloom?
From Houston Chronicle, August 2004 (first link below):

"Hibiscus note

Too much or too little fertilizer or water and excess temperatures can cause hibiscus buds to drop. This can be worse in some seasons than in others and among some varieties more than others. Double types may be more prone than others.

But more recently, we reported hibiscus experts Roz and Pat Merritt's advice on dealing with the gall midge, another cause of bud drop. The midge lays its eggs in buds, causing them to yellow and fall off the plant. If you cut a bud open, you may see the larvae.

Pick up all fallen buds and pick off all yellow buds, seal them in a plastic bag and dispose of the bag.

You could spray the plant with a product containing imidicloprid. Treat the ground/pot soil with a granular product that will target the stage that pupates in the ground. Spray three times at three-day intervals to get all stages. Cold weather should set the pests back. "

From Klahanie Greehouses (2nd link, more info)

"All Hibiscus rosa-sinensis need good, regular feeding and the soil must be kept MOIST (not wet) at all times. Failure to do so will cause the buds to fall off. "

Also, check out the third link for several other FAQ's about hibiscus and their answers.

Hope this helps your problem! Good luck.
Reply:Premature flower drop sometimes has to do with culivar selection! Sometimes it is insects living in the plant. Environmental conditions can even cause the buds to drop.

Here is a great article on hibiscus:

http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/MG020

Sounds like you are supplying them with the proper light, water and fertilizer requirements. How big are the pots you put them in compared to the root mass? They may be in pots too big for their root mass, and the water you may be giving them may not be enough, or too much depending on how long it takes for the pot to dry out. I know some plants do not like to be potted up, and it is possible that they are in a pot that is too big. (You could put two plants in a pot, depending on how big the plants and pots are!)

If you do choose to spray an insecticide, imidacloprid would work, but the insects must feed on it for it to work (it is not a contact insecticide). Imidacloprid is a systemic insecticide. It is taken up by the plant, so when an insect feeds on it, they eat the poison and die. You could spray a contact insecticide that will work on caterpillars and other pests. Something like a pyrethroid will work. These are sold in any home/garden store.

A word of caution... hibiscus are very sensitive to chemicals, so be careful when applying anything so you don't hurt them!

Try to figure out if it is the environment causing the problem before you spray something that you may not need to spray!

Hope this helps!

From which part of the crocus flower is saffron obtained? =O omg!?
Saffron is a spice derived from the flower of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus), a species of crocus in the family Iridaceae.

The flower has three stigmas, which are the distal ends of the plant's carpels.

Together with its style, the stalk connecting the stigmas to the rest of the plant, these components are often dried and used in cooking as a seasoning and colouring agent and marketed as saffron.

Saffron, which has for decades been the world's most expensive spice by weight, is native to Southwest Asia.

It was first cultivated in the vicinity of Greece.

Reply:This is not a simple question. You will find answers that say the female parts (style %26amp; stigma) and the male parts (stamen [composed of anther and filament]). Both are correct, but not complete. I once grew and harvested saffron and I dried the anthers and styles/stigmas separately. They both add a great yellow color to paella. I did not taste a difference, but I am sure that some can. Harvesting with tweezers once was enough. I now buy it in a grocery store.

If you would like an official sounding citation how about this from an offical EU document? But note that I think the document should say anther rather than stamen because when I harvested with tweezers I did not get any of the filament.

"The stigmas are a lustrous to orange colour, length 40 to 50 mm together with part of the style. Their top end is serrated and under their weight they incline downwards, often outside the conoid. The saffron crocus is grown for the orange red stigmas of the flower and secondarily for the three yellow stamens. Its uses are many and various: in pharmacy, baking, cookery, cheese making, pasta production, the drinks industry and artists' paints."

Which of the following parts of a plant let it reproduce without seeds? fruit, stem, roots, leaves,or flower?tyvm
Stems and roots could reproduce without seeds. Stems can "reproduce" if you take a cutting of the plant and grow it in a separate pot. Roots can definitely reproduce without seeds.
Reply:NOT fruit or flower because these have to do with the production and dispersal of seeds.

Plants can be reproduced vegetatively from:

ROOTS - a root can grow a new plant

STEMS - can produce roots called adventitious roots and develop into new plants that can be grown

LEAVES - on some plants such as kalanchoe, jade plant, begonia, African violet, etc., can put out roots and produce new plants.

Add buds to this list.
Reply:I was pulling weeds in my backyard and noticed that half of the weeds were part of a large, complex root system. Basically on big plant that sprouted in many places. So I'd have to say the roots.
Reply:depending on the plant the root can reproduce a new plant if the root cutting is big enough.

How do I create a flower garden around a tree? I am a beginner in gardening and planting?

I have an old tree in front of my home. I like to add a flower bed around the tree, but I am new to planting and gardening. Also, my lawn needs a lot of care. Last year my husband tilled part of our lawn and we replanted new grass, but our lawn looks very unhealty with a lot of try, burned like spots. What can I do to have a healthy lawn, and how do I go about creating my flower bed around the tree. I like to put a border around the tree like a small wall maybe. I want the flower bed be higher than the actual lawn. We have mostly clay dirt. Can you give me some advice and/or help. Thanks.

How do I create a flower garden around a tree? I am a beginner in gardening and planting?
Two words: Container Gardening.
Reply:first, if your lawn has any burn spots, it sounds like he put too much fertilizer on it, %26amp; not enough water, %26amp; never do this during the day, the sun will make the fertilizer hot, %26amp; burn whatever it is on. Water your lawn in the morning, not at night, %26amp; not during the middle of the day either.( it'll burn it %26amp; at night, it brings bugs)

If you want the flower garden higher then the lawn, first, put a border around the tree, as far out as you want the flower garden to be, then build it up with some good potting soil, %26amp; perlite, then, before you add any flowers to it, water it first, slowly, %26amp; when you plant your flowers , do not crowd them when you, %26amp; bury the flowers just about up to the where the bottom leaves start.

If you have mostly clay dirt, try to keep your flowers just in the potting soil mix. You can feed them "not on top of the flowers" around the stems, with Miracle-gro for flowers, about once a month, or what it tells you on the side of the box,( when you plant your flowers, try to do this "after" the sun is going down" because the sun will burn the roots of the flowers.) %26amp; Good Luck !!!
Reply:A raised bed is probably beast around the tree as you don't want to till down and distub the roots. As best you can try to keep the deepest portion of the raised bed out at the drip line of the tree again so as not to interfere with the roots of the tree.

in humans, the vascular tissue, like veins and arteries, and such, carry blood throughout the body. the hemoglobin in the blood can carry oxygen, and carbon dioxide is also carried out via the lungs, also nutrients are carried in there too

the xylem transports water throughout the plant body, and the phloem transports sugars from the source to the sink

the petals of the flower r used to attract pollinators, like birds and bees to the plant, so the pollen (male gametes) can be taken from the anther to the stigma, where it can be dropped off (pollinatation) and a pollen tube can grow down the style towards the overy to fertilize the egg

there are negative feedback systems and positive

negative - there are so many examples like the sodium-potassium pump

positive - contractions during birth

variables - independent variable - the variable that changes in the experiment (usually only one)

dependent variable - does not change

many diff. units of measurements, like mols, grams, calories, etc.

What is the function of a flower, and what roles do it's different parts play?
The flower is the sexual reproductive part of an angiosperm; its purpose is to produce seeds so as to carry on the species. It consists of four whorls of modified leaves : sepals, petals, stamens and carpals. The stamens are the male reproductive parts which includes the sporangia that produces pollen. The carpals are the female reproductive parts and includes the sporangia that produces the egg.

The petals attract pollinators and protect the sexual parts. The sepals protect the flower during the bud stage.

I have some flowers to give a part of a present for my ma's birthday, except they have opened out yet, they are still in there buds ( sorry about the terminology i'm not familiar with the subject :s) Is there anyway to make them open by perhaps adding something to the water? Thanks to all the answers they will be appreciated :D

How to make flowers flower for tomorrow its my mothers 50th birthday!?
Half 7up and half tap water. Put them in a vase with that mixture tonight before bed.
Reply:Besides some of the other suggestions, and since you didn't mention the type of flowers, I'd recommend heat. If it's a sunny day where you are set them in the sun and make sure it's stifling hot around them.
Reply:it can't be open except by force cause its already cut, i don't know if there is any substance that you can put in the water to open it.
Reply:Gently rub your thumb over the top of the buds i promise they will open, works brilliant on roses, also warm water because most flowers have been frozen.x.
Reply:I'm almost positive it wont flower by tomorrow. Why not find a poem online about a mothers love and how love grows and tie that in with the flower.

Will Ortho Weed-B-Gon Pro (for broadleaf weeds) harm my garden or flower beds?

Our lawn was serviced by Scott's and the weed killer was added to our flower beds and part of the vegetable garden, which I'm planning on seeding within a few weeks. Everything I've read says that most of the weed killers (except the non-selective ones like Roundup) are safe, but I can't find any info on this particular product. The service company says it'll be fine, but I wanted a few other opinions.

Will Ortho Weed-B-Gon Pro (for broadleaf weeds) harm my garden or flower beds?
BEWARE...vegetables and flowers are mostly broad-leafed plants, and the product you mention is NOT going to know weeds from your garden plants. If it was applied to open soil it does absolutely nothing, as it must be applied to actively growing weeds.

Now if it was a PRE-Emergent control...that stops seed from sprouting if applied before they grow, it should have been applied after planting what you wanted, and I feel it should never be around food crops even if labeled as safe. There really is no good science to guarantee it is not going to hurt you later.

If it was a "weed killer" either remove the top inch of soil to get it out, or add lots of organic amendments to soil and till it all very deep and mix it well. Unless it was over-applied (too much put on soil) that should safeguard your new plantings.

Finally, tell the company that did this, that they should consult with you BEFORE doing any applications, and if you don't trust their knowledge, find out at a local nursery or here before approving it...better yet, get a company you can trust to know better.
Reply:yes, it will. but it needs to be applied to the plant. Chances are good that if Scott's applied it, they were careful not to get it on your garden plants.

Be careful, though if you compost your grass clippings.
Reply:I belive it will I'd add 1-2 inches of soil before it plant.
Reply:Ortho will work provided you use the correct dilution ratios for specific plants and gardens to eliminate broadleaf weeds.

I want to work in a flower shop: tips?

im really interested in getting a part time job in a flower store. im wondering though, if i'll be able to arrange the flowers myself, or if ill just be selling them ... im not sure how flower shops work, but im mostly interested in arranging them. testimonies would be nice :)

I want to work in a flower shop: tips?
Starting out you will do a lot of prep work for the main flower arrangers. Some of the jobs you will have to do is help process flowers as they come in from suppliers....this means cleaning and sorting flowers, cleaning out buckets or vats to hold flowers, hauling the buckets into coolers, and cleaning up mess of leaves and packaging left over. Not very glamourous but it is a learning process.

Also you will be required to keep flowers cleaned on daily process of stripping leaves, sorting out dead or wilted flowers, and replacing water/mix in buckets. Also if flower shop has live plants and flowering plants you will be the one to water those and keep leaves cleaned on plants and if order comes in for live plants you will be one to pick out plant, wrap it and add instruction tag to it.

Another thing that you will do alot is prep vases....this means lots of floral taping tops of vases for flower arranger.

Once you get all these beginner jobs under hand you will slowly start doing simple arranging.

Some selling is involved....you may be the one who mans the phone or counter and have to take orders or call in flower orders to suppliers.

I worked at two different flower shops and it took many months before I got to do much flower arranging...even then the owners and their main designer did most of the big arrangements.

It is a long road but it will build up your floral knowledge and eventually you may work yourself up to one of the flower arrangers. It is a fun atmosphere to work in everyday.....especially in winter to be surrounded by fresh flowers.
Reply:My first job was part time at a florist, I was 16. I washed a lot of buckets and cleaned the coolers constantly. I answered the phones, took flower orders and got orders for the customers who came in. I did get to get looses flowers for people and put them in the cellophane, do balloon bouquets and during prom and homecoming season I got to help do boutonnieres and corsages. It was a lot of work and I ruined a lot of clothes with the bleach used to clean the buckets but I loved it and I'm glad I got to do it.

Edit- I forgot I did get to green arrangements, putting all the greenery in before the flowers were put in so I did help make some of the arrangements.
Reply:We are a florist. We have hired a number of young females over the years. Very few (less than 10%) lasted more than one year. They either were let go or just quit. This is not just us. Florist jobs are pretty much misunderstood.

To enjoy a job in a flower shop...

1) You shouldn't mind getting dirty. A flower shop is more like a grocery store than like a boutique. Forget about wearing pretty clothes, high-heels, or manicures.

2) You must be quick and able to work under stress. If you've worked in a fast-paced restaurant, you should be OK.

3) You must be a "People's person", meaning that you should have a good social skill. Florists are retailers, not artists.

You don't need to be a perfect fit. No one is. However, if you are not good at dealing with people (#3 above), for example, you should be very good at #1 or #2.
Reply:Try and collect t as much knowledge as you can about flowers/plants etc. Look up on the Internet at any jobs going in the flower shop and it will give a description of what will be asked of you when you start working there. Try to look as confident as you can and good luck!

What is the specific name on the part of the flower that fuse to form a seed or a fruit?

the part of flower that gets converted to fruit on fusing with sperms from the pollen grains is the ovary... the ovules inside the ovary gets converted into seeds

What is the specific name on the part of the flower that fuse to form a seed or a fruit?
The ovule becomes the seeds. They are found in the ovary which becomes the fruit.
Reply:It's called a carpel. It contains the ovaries. A pistil can contain a number of carpels.
Reply:Stagma or ovule, I think

Perfect semi formal makeup

What parts of the flowers are male structures? Female structures?

If I could have few for both....that would be great! Thanks!

What parts of the flowers are male structures? Female structures?
Androecium is the organ for male reproductive system. It is composed of stamens. The number of stamens varies from species to species from one to infinite. An ideal stamen consists of filament and anther. Anther is having lobes which are connected by the connective tissue in between the two lobes. Antherlobes contain pollen grains which are the male gametophyte. During pollination the pollen grains are carried by different vectors such as wind, insect, birds etc. to the female organ of the same flower or different flower.

The female reproductive organ of a flower is called as gynoecium which is composed of ovary , style and stigma. Gynoecium may have single ovary or many ovaries fused together. The style is connected to the ovary and it generally protrudes out of the flower. On the tip of the style there is flat structure called as stigma. This is a sticky surface and pollen grains reside on the stigma after pollination. The stigma gives necessary moisture for the pollen grain to germinate and the pollen tube formed from the pollen travels through the style upto the ovule which is present inside the ovary.
Reply:male structures are androcium and female are gymnocium

What is the female part of a flower known as?

The pistil has three parts: stigma, style, and ovary. The stigma is the sticky surface at the top of the pistil; it traps and holds the pollen. The style is the tube-like structure that holds up the stigma. The style leads down to the ovary that contains the ovules.

What is the female part of a flower known as?
Pulpa
Reply:It called the pistil
Reply:pistilate or female
Reply:Pistil
Reply:The female part is the pistil.
Reply:pistil, yes, definitely pistil

What are all the "parts" of a wedding. For example: their is the flower girl, bride, groom, what else?????????
Maid (unmarried) or Matron (married) of Honor - the bride's main attendant. She basically helps the bride get ready, calms nerves and during the ceremony, will hold the bride's bouquet for her and keep the bride's train (if her dress has one) laying flat.

Best Man - the groom's main attendant. He often is responsible for holding the rings prior to the ring exchange in the ceremony.

Bride's Maids - other attendants for the bride. They also help the bride get ready and walk the aisle right after the flower girl.

Groomsmen or Ushers - other attendants for the groom. They are usually responsible for seating guests before the wedding ceremony and/or passing-out programs, if you have them.

Ring Bearer - optional, because often the rings are held by the Best Man. The Ring Bearer is usually a small child (boy) who carries a decorative lacy pillow with the rings tied to it with ribbons.

But these are all subject to whatever you want - it's YOUR day! So, you can determine what works for you.

Insects ate the flowers so I am assuming no Buckeyes. The tree is about 4 years old, stands at 6 ft high.

A question on Buckeye trees. Does the flower part that blooms in the spring become the Buckeye?
If the flowers were pollinated, they will become buckeyes. Chances are that they were pollinated before the bugs ate them.

Good luck with your buckeye tree.

Why hasn't my amaryllis flower budded yet?

I planted an amaryllis bulb in the beginning of June and the green leafy part has grown huge, but it still hasn't budded the flower part yet. I have watered it appropriately and even given it the appropriate bulb food. The green leaves are getting so huge that they are actually falling over, but there is no sign of a flower anywhere...What is wrong??

Why hasn't my amaryllis flower budded yet?
Amaryllis is normally a flower that is a winter bloomer. First off make sure that it is planted correctly. The bulb should sit in the pot so that a third of the bulb is above the soil. The leaves that are growing now are feeding the bulb for a winter bloom. I normally let mine grow in the container outside in partial shade throughout the spring and summer and then bring it in during fall to prepare it for winter blooms. When the leaves begin to yellow around in August, reduce watering. The rest period will begin. From fall to Jan/Feb. put the pot somewhere cooler (around 61-63 degrees) Let it go entirely dry. At the end of January a new flower stalk will appear. Place it in a warmer location, increase watering, give it plenty of light, when it blooms temperature should not exceed 64 degrees. The blooms last longer if they are not in direct light. The more the plant grows the more water it needs. Feed it lightly every month until it shows signs of wanting to go dormant. From September to December keep it dry.

Repot it every 3 or 4 years after its rest period. Use rich potting soil with an equal amount of sand to insure proper drainage. The old flower stalks and leaves dry out by themselves. When repotting remove any dry foliage and stalks.

Dividing side bulbs is the easiest way of propagating. Just replant each bulb in its own pot. It takes 2-3 years for them to bloom though. If you follow these steps then you should have winter blooms on your plant.

I hope this helps. Any more questions feel free to email me. I will be glad to help.

Which part of the flower produces the aroma?

Specifically what organ in the flower causes it to emit scents.

Which part of the flower produces the aroma?
Any part of a plant has aromas, not just the flower, but the flower is the sexual stage of the plant and has to attract the help of the pollinators! But the most "famous and loved" aromas are found within the vacuoles within the cells of the cbeautifully olorful petals of flowering plants. These contain the most natural aromatic floral oils (which cause the aromas) that we can smell; aromas-scented oils were basically "designed by nature" to attract the birds-bees-pollinators; fruits produce aromas-aromatic oils too.(fruits are just pregnant flowers, the "swollen" ovaries of the stigma)
Reply:Mostly the petals.
Reply:Many flowers in nature have evolved to attract animals to pollinate the flower, the movements of the pollinating agent contributing to the opportunity for genetic recombinations within a dispersed plant population. Flowers that are insect-pollinated are called entomophilous (literally "insect-loving"). Flowers commonly have glands called nectaries on their various parts that attract these animals. Birds and bees are common pollinators: both having color vision, thus opting for "colorful" flowers. Some flowers have patterns, called nectar guides, that show pollinators where to look for nectar; they may be visible to us or only under ultraviolet light, which is visible to bees and some other insects. Flowers also attract pollinators by scent. Many of their scents are pleasant to our sense of smell, but not all. Some plants, such as Rafflesia, the titan arum, and the North American pawpaw (Asimina triloba), are pollinated by flies, so produce a scent imitating rotting meat.

How to collect seeds from flowers and what part of the flower do you get the seed?

Do appreciate an honest answer please

How to collect seeds from flowers and what part of the flower do you get the seed?
move they dead flower bulbs pedals and put your had underneath the middle. then shack it a little bit and some should come out
Reply:Well I have Zinnias %26amp; Marigolds in my garden and as the blooms die and dry out the petal fall off and what is left are the seeds. If i pull the blooms off too early the seeds are white or thin..But after waiting for the blooms to die all the way the seeds will be full and black or dark brown. Zinnia seeds are very obvious though and not all flowers are so cooperative.
Reply:Different plants will have different ways to collect seeds some might fall to the ground and others the seeds are inside the flowers or in pods. You have to decide on the plant you want to propagate.
Reply:This depends on the type of flowers. Some seeds are formed in a seed pod and others are formed as dried blooms. Mostly, seeds form where the flower was.

If a flower has both male and female parts, does that mean that they are all transvestites?

No they would be considered hermaphrodites not transvestites. A transvestite would be Clay Aiken while a hermaphrodite would be Dennis Rodman.

If a flower has both male and female parts, does that mean that they are all transvestites?
in flowers it is generally not called hermafroditic plant but MONOECIOUS plant (mono=one oecum=house meaning both SEXES in one PLACE).

it is more common than the other type of plants , dioecious, that has male plant and female plants (not only cannabis, but many others as well)

a transvestite plant is a bit of a nonsense, as far as i know
Reply:In order for a flower to be a transvestite, it would have to have only one set of reproductive organs, but enjoy dressing like flowers of the opposite sex. This is fairly rare among flowers.

I believe the word you meant was hermaphrodite, and I suppose you could use that term, but it usually denotes an anomaly, whereas it's a normal quality for almost all kinds of flowers. The only exception that I know of is the Cannabis genus, which actually has male and female plants.

Also, hermaphrodites normally only have one functional set of reproductive organs, whereas with flowers, both sets are normally functional and they can even pollenate themselves.
Reply:its called a hermaphrodite. having both male and female sex organs
Reply:No... they are hermaphadites.
Reply:Transvestites are those who change from one sex to another.

You mean hermaphrodites. Yes, they are hermaphrodites, have both male and female counterparts.
Reply:Yes it is true that flowers are hermaphrodites, however they do not necessarily pollinate themselves. The female parts mature faster than the male parts. This encourages cross fertilization, in other words getting pollen from another flower. So they don't always pollinate themselves, but yes...they can.

What are the four parts of a flower?

1. petals

2. stamen

3. pistol

4. stem

What are the four parts of a flower?
The four main parts or whorls (starting from the base of the flower or lowest node and working upwards) are as follows

* calyx – the outer whorl of sepals; typically these are green, but are petal-like in some species

* corolla – the whorl of petals, which are usually thin, soft and colored to attract insects that help the process of pollination.

* androecium (from Greek andros oikia: man's house) – one or two whorls of stamens, each a filament topped by an anther where pollen is produced. Pollen contains the male gametes.

* gynoecium (from Greek gynaikos oikia: woman's house) – one or more pistils. The female reproductive organ is the carpel: this contains an ovary with ovules (which contain female gametes). A pistil may consist of a number of carpels merged together, in which case there is only one pistil to each flower, or of a single individual carpel (the flower is then called apocarpous). The sticky tip of the pistil, the stigma, is the receptor of pollen. The supportive stalk, the style becomes the pathway for pollen tubes to grow from pollen grains adhering to the stigma, to the ovules, carrying the reproductive material.

What part of a flower becomes the seed? Which part becomes the fruit?

I'm doing biology homework, and I can't find the answer to those 2 questions. Thanks!

What part of a flower becomes the seed? Which part becomes the fruit?
A fruit is a ripened ovary. After the ovule in an ovary is fertilized in a process known as pollination, the ovary begins to ripen. The ovule develops into a seed and the ovary wall pericarp may become fleshy (as in berries or drupes), or form a hard outer covering (as in nuts). In some cases, the sepals, petals and/or stamens and style of the flower fall off. Fruit development continues until the seeds have matured. With some multiseeded fruits the extent to which the flesh develops is proportional to the number of fertilized ovules.

What are accessory parts of the flower? enumerate and describe each.?

Perianth - the outer floral parts, composed of the calyx and the corolla.

Tepal - used when calyx and corolla are very similar and not easily distinguished as in Lilium catesbaei (pine lily).

Calyx - the ring of sepals making up the outermost, leaflike part of the flower. Sepals are commonly green, but may be almost any color and serve primarily as protection for the other floral parts.

Corolla - the inner set of leaflike parts lying just within the calyx and composed of petals . Petals are generally white or brightly colored to attract pollinating insects to their nectar. They also serve as protection for the innermost organs.

Receptacle or torus - the apex of the pedicel upon which the organs of a flower are developed.

Floral Bracts - modified leaves which can simulate petals and add the conspicuous part to otherwise inconspicuous flowers. Examples are the red bracts surrounding the small Euphorbia pulcherrima (poinsettia) flowers; the purple, red, or white leaves enclosing the small white flowers of Bougainvillea spp. (bougainvillea); or the white leaves of Cornus florida (flowering dogwood). Many plants have floral bracts which are not colorful such as Fittonia vershaffeltii (silver nerve plant).

More than likely it is the weather. Mine looks like it is dying from the bottom upwards! Any that I have seen around all look pretty pathetic! Prune back the bad bits.

The two essential parts of a flower are...?

the stamen and the stigma as these are the sexual reproductive parts in the plant. The stamen is the male sexual organ and the stigma is the female sexual organ, without these the flowers would not be there in the first place.

I am looking for a plant that has a flower like Dutchman's Breeches does not have the compound or fern leaf.

Looking for a plant that has a flower like Dutchman's or Dutchmen's Breeches but this one has white breeches and a bit of a red flower part coming out from the breeches part. The leave are not fern-like or compound. They are simple oval shaped leaves, thick and the plant is a very strong vine. I lost mine due to the deep freeze we had in California and want to buy some. Does anyone know what these are called and where I can buy them?

I am looking for a plant that has a flower like Dutchman's Breeches does not have the compound or fern leaf.
While your description is better than many on this site, I can't identify your plant based on what you have provided. There are all kinds of plant identification websites that make use of color photos. You might want to search for them by typing "plant identification" or "flower identification" in the Yahoo search box.

The quickest way to identify your flower will probably require a visit to a local plant nursery. They will be familiar with plants that are common in your area. I'm guessing they are busy identifying and selling replacements for all kinds of plants damaged in the California freeze.

Good luck with your gardening.

For a model, I need to make a full flower, a hald flower, and a leaf. How should I present this?

Ok... we were supposed to do the flower things, make a leaf, and a stem, but mine has a stem, and then a stemlet thing off the main stem, and a ton of leaves off that stem. do you think it would be alright if i just showed one leaf and the stem coming off the flower and didn't connect them, and how should i present this to get the best grade. BTW, my flower is a trumpet flower. It's basically like a big red hunnysuckle. This grade is pretty important to my science grade, because I can't get less than a "C" on mid-quarter. Thank you! Oh yah, long answers are cool, if you have lots of tips, but I need as many as possible, and try to get my favorite answer. I'll select favorites after I get my grades. Oh, and I need them fast, cuz my model is due tomorow. PS: I also have to label all the parts of the flower (ex: stamen, anther...) And if you're just answering this for points, go ahead, but please tell me so if it's just some weird thing. Actually, just tell me you needed points. THNX!!!!!

For a model, I need to make a full flower, a hald flower, and a leaf. How should I present this?
Use a PVC pipe for the main stem, maybe some PVC rods for the stemlet, cover it with aluminium foil or colored paper to make it look rough. add card board for leaves and probably you can use styrofoam for the flower head + cardboard for the petals.

edit: I didn't know what a trumpet flower was but I just saw a picture. probably for the flower itself, you could use a PET bottle (like those 600ml or 1.5L coke/pepsi bottles) cut the bottom off and fold some triangular parts up alittle to look like the petals.

I want to grow Texas Blue Bells from seed, but what part of the flower head has the seed?

I dead headed some, then set aside to dry more-but the seed pod was still green at the base of the dead petals. Are the seeds going to be in the pod thingy or on the end of each petal?? I heard they were small but this is ridiculous! Where are they?

I want to grow Texas Blue Bells from seed, but what part of the flower head has the seed?
Seeds are contained in the fruits, which are the matured, ripened ovary of the flower. Chances are if you deadheaded, the seeds are too young to germinate. You'll want to leave an inflorescence or two on the plant till the fruit (=seed pod) starts to get dry on its own.
Reply:You should not deadhead the flowers until all the parts (particularly the seed pod) are dry if you want the seeds. When they are dry, put the seed pods in a paper bag and let them dry some more. Then you will be able to free the seeds by crushing the pods with your fingers. The seeds will all fall into the bottom of the bag.

Good Luck!!!

I need advice for my first flower garden?

I have one partial sun area, and another area with no sun. Bad dirt with weeds. What do I do first about the old dirt? Do you buy new dirt, with like fertilizer in it? Then I know I pick flowers based on the amount of sun, but should I buy them already sprouting? I think that would be easier. So you just dig a whole and put it in the ground surrouned by the fresh dirt? And I'm not big on watering, but when you do water you just get the roots not the actual flower bud part right? haha help! thanks so much

I need advice for my first flower garden?
Till up the soil with a tiller or shovel, and buy plants in lieu of seeds. Shade, go with impatiens. Sun area, petunias are easy and tough. Use miracle grow liquid fertilizer and water regularly. Easy to do, and you will love it.
Reply:Improve the soil by adding compost and manure. Cultivate the ground well. It is usually esier to buy flowers as six packs. Water after planting and make sure they get about an inch of water from rain or watering each week.
Reply:You don't need to replace the old dirt-just add stuff to it. The easiest thing is organic matter, usually called compost or (ew) cow manure (comes bagged, sterilized and not as bad as you might think-the really courageous can find an old barn and clean out the old stuff). This softens the soil, and will feed the plants. It's also less expensive than new soil. It's faster to put plants in (seeds will take a couple more months to flower).

Watering-soak the ground around the plants the first time you plant them. Water new plants pretty often for the first two weeks. By then they should be established and require less care except for weeding. If they get wilty, water immediately.

Good luck. Trial and error will teach you the best plants for your area (but if you get some plants at a regular greenhouse, they'll be likely to know more than the people at the discount place, and you can ask questions about plants). I had one corner where nothing I tried grew. It was 4yrs. before I got something growing in there.

I love flowers, but i won't give them special treatment-no winter coddling, and no winter protection. If it didn't survive, I just put something else in there the next year.
Reply:Do you want annual or perrenial...difference being annual only flowers to season then dies or drops seeds the other is forever ok...so you have to plan what you want easy care...so I will thow some suggestions and see if you like them...hmm ok the dirt should be ok why dont you give it a good soak leave the hose in for say half an hr depending on the size of the area get your hoe digger..after the good soak and dig all the soil up deep get all the weeds out get some manure and put it over say a few inches thick all over then water that in..preperation you see...now allways put taller growing plants to the back then work height down especially if your against a wall and if you want assorted type rows say...now for the sunny area if you would like hardy easy care type plants daisys are allways nice all you could put seeds in and lightly spray only for seeds you dont want to create a flood...if not seedlings are another choice ...dont for get you can get cuttings of a lot of plants and these will grow daisys are pretty easy to strike....shady area agapanthas are real easy but they like a little sun here and there but like shade to ...now some of your questions well if you buy a plant with say a few flowers and lots of buds this is allways good the reason being you can see the colour of the flower and the buds will open and look pretty in your garden if there all flowers they finish quick then you have to wait a few weeks to flower again...yes the roots only is good but ferns and some plants like a bit of water in there foilage like suculants to....and no you dont dig a hole in the old dirt and mix the new dirt around the plant what use is that the roots need all the nutrition not the plant so if you want to buy some soil as well mix it through just do like I said in the beginning and you will do ok...and a good way to check if plants need water is put your finger in the soil if its damp thats ok dry needs water depends on the weather a lot....summer water in the late afternoon in winter water in the morning.....and I guess you will ask why well the plants drink in the night and earlly morning slowly...so in summer usually the sun dries it up before they even start to drink so of a late evening is good winter the plants keep moist longer because its cold so morning is good so the day dries excess water up because you dont want your plants rotting anyway goodluck hey I am sure you will get a lot of rewards from it....
Reply:seeds+dirt+sun= flowergarden
Reply:You'll need to work up the soil where the garden is to get rid of the weeds and loosen it up. You can just dig it and turn the ground over with a shovel. It would probably be good to mix in some manure, fertilizer and maybe peat moss when you do that.

Choose bedding plants that suit the area as far as sunlight and check how tall the plants will grow so you don't have tall things in front and short in the back. Impatiens is a good plant for areas with no sun.

Watering is best done early in the morning or later in the evening to prevent the plants from getting sunburn from water on the leaves. Roses are the only plants that you shouldn't get the leaves wet.

What are some edible flowers I can plant? And which parts of the plants?

This is my first year planting a garden and I want to know if some of the flowers I am planting are edible, and, if so, which parts. I am planting Marigolds, Sunflowers, and Zinnias right now, but I can always plant more. Please be specific with which parts I can and cannot eat

What are some edible flowers I can plant? And which parts of the plants?
oliander, no, wait, I think thats deadly, don't eat it.
Reply:Almost all herbs - chives, sage, thyme, sweet woodruff, basil, dill, cilantro, dandelions, all parts of these are edible, and depending what zone you live in, these are either perennial or will reseed themselves - so you'll have them back every year!
Reply:Most lilies including tiger lilies and day lilies have edible petals.

Mint also has edible leaves and they grow very fast, they take over gardens quickly. Sage, Thyme, Oregano and Basil are other popular herbs with edible leaves. Happy planting!

How do I get my neighbors cats to stop from using my flower beds as a litter box?

she started letting them outside during the day and now they use my flower beds and parts of my yard as a litter box. is there any way to get them to stop. it really smells and attracts other cats from the neighborhood. i have asked her to keep an eye on them but that hasn't work. i need some suggestions before her cats disappear.

How do I get my neighbors cats to stop from using my flower beds as a litter box?
i have heard that u can put orange peels around the garden. cats dont like the smell of orange for some reason unknown and it's good for the enviroment too!! so it's a 2 in 1 benifeit! other than that u could spray orange stuff or go with what the others say too! i dont know if moth balls will owrk cuz we were told that how to get rid of shunks and we put tons out and we still couldn't get rid of them.
Reply:Put up a fence around your flower beds (tall enough the cat cant get in) or put chicken wire up to protect your plants.

Humane, cheap and wont effect your flowers.

Also, if this continues to happen call your local humane society-- your neighbor will get warned first and then ticketed.
Reply:You can put some smooth rocks over the top of the dirt in your flower beds, such as river rocks. Or cedar chips will often repell cats.

Also, it is hard, but talk to your neighbors. Perhaps your neighbor doesn't know that her cats are pooping in your flower bed, or that you don't like it. It seems like she should, but she may not.

Talk to her.
Reply:Sprinkle Cayenne in the flower bed. When the cats come sniffing around they'll make for the hills! It won't hurt the cat, just make it sneeze and leave your flower beds alone.
Reply:Ok

Get rat poison, then put out cat chow

Reply:you could always know what shes scared of and do that
Reply:My grandmother told me mothballs around your plants will keep cats away and it wouldn't hurt to put a few along your property line especially as close to your neighbor's house as you can, put a lot maybe the smell will cause them to keep their cats at home so you will remove the moth balls. Also throw hot water on them.
Reply:well...... do u have a cat? if u do does it have a litter box or does it go outside for that? if it goes outside then there is your problem.... try and get or make some scarecrows! ones that are really floppy and that move in the wind so that if a cat wants to get into your yard and then it sees the scarecrows it will b so scared especially if u r there too and u r waving a rake around. lol

hope i helped....i usually do.
Reply:Yes cayenne pepper just sprinkle it around (like fairy dust), that other stuff is crazy....chicken wire (pssshh).
Reply:wait and if u see them squirt them with water and cats hate water after a while they will understand that if they do that they get sprayed and will stop trying all together
Reply:I bet you get a lot of abuse - I did when asking a question about neighbour related pet problems. The generall thing was don`t be so petty, love thy neighbour, that sort of thing!

Pepper dust should deter the cats. Otherwise use a washing up liquid bottlle and squirt them with water - it doesn`t hurt them at all but just gets the message through,

Good luck, other peoples pet control or lack of it can be a reall problem.
Reply:well, you can go and buy the bitter apple stuff, and spray it near your plants. or put down some chicken wire around your plants. that will also keep the cats from digging. :) you can lay it on the surface, or just beneath it.
Reply:If you live near a park you could try planting catnip near a park , all of the cats will go crazy for it and pee at the place where you planed the catnip, yoiu could try this
Reply:I'm a hillbilly, redneck, good ole countryboy,or white trash with a degree so I dont think you really want my answer to this question but I know how you feel as I have had to deal with this kind of thing before.Cat's are a dime a dozen here in the appalachian mtns. a lot of people "accidental like" leave anti-freeze out in a pie pan,or we even try the old bb gun first, and of course the water gun or hose, and the everloved mothball. The best thing so far has been of course a $.03 22 LR bullet.
Reply:Set out a few steel traps like they use for raccoons and beavers. One misstep and Fluffy's on her way to kitty heaven, and your flower beds will never look better!
Reply:Cover the ground with cedar or rocks...that should deter them. It makes me sick how people feel violence or killing is the answer. It is not the cats fault that it has irresponsible owners.
Reply:I've heard a little bit of ammonia with a lot of water in a spray bottle. Spray it at them and they will remember.
Reply:i would grow some basil in the back maybe or somthing minty. cats HATE the smell of mint

squirt bottle works too.
Reply:exactly i really feel this one moth balls work put them under soil not far in when they smell it they wont go there it worked for me my kitty has a place that we take care of she doesnt mess in house but shes old and well trained but that lady sounds like my neighbor whose dogs dump in front of my house

Petunia confusion, when the flower is old what part of the flower do you remove?

do you just remove the petals or the whole thing so it will rebloom?

Petunia confusion, when the flower is old what part of the flower do you remove?
The whole point of removing the spent flowers is so that the plant will not form a seed pod, and spend a bunch of energy and resources making seeds. You want it to spend energy making more flowers instead.

If you remove only the petals, the seed pod will still form. Pinch it off BEHIND the base of the flower (the little swollen part between the end of the stem, and the petals). That way, no seed pod.
Reply:Remove the petals as well as the as the calyx (the green parts that "support" the petals). Be especially sure to remove the ovary of each blossom, so that the plant doesn't set seed, and quit blooming.
Reply:Hi, remove the whole thing. Arn't they pretty? Bye
Reply:Remove the dead bloom. If the plants get long and scraggly you can cut them back and they will form new shoots.
Reply:Remove the old flower completely or any seed pods that you can find. That will keep it blooming.
Reply:Just the petals...it is called "deadheading".

When spraying raid for outdoor use, is it okay to get some on the flower part of the plants?

It will borwn most flowers, but shouldn't hurt the plant. Try not to soak the leaves. If insects are bothering your plnts, use insecticidal soap on the plants themselves-- in the cooler part of the day, not when it's hot and not on wilted plants.

When spraying raid for outdoor use, is it okay to get some on the flower part of the plants?
No you should not get contents on the plants, leaves or blooms. It is the chemical and the propellant , as if you used an aerosol. Raid is quite oily and thereby penetrates the cells of the leaves and can turn that portion of the leaf opaque. Wash plants with water when you have an accidental contact.
Reply:It would depend on the type of raid that you used. But for most types it shouldn't harm the plant at all. You may have discoloration of the flower. Now if you are trying to get rid of ants on your plants there are other solutions for that. But it shouldn't harm your plant.
Reply:no, you shouldn't spray the flower
Reply:Yeah, it wont hurt your flowers. But dont completely flood your plants with it. Also, if you have pets, be sure not to get it around anywhere your animal might be for the next couple of hours until it dries.
