Can a cat get bloody diahrea from eating dog food?

This cat showed no signs of being sick - gets up at 4am to play around the house, eats his food all day including the dog's... then he had a case of diahrea this morning and went on the floor. He may have eaten something he shouldn't have too like part of a dried flower. I hope that this will go away in a few days, he is supposed to get neutered on the 10th.... what should I do?

Can a cat get bloody diahrea from eating dog food?
Bloody diahrrea in a cat may mean he's in the early stages of peritonitis. It's a bad deal and you don't want to mess around with waiting to have it checked out.

Cats don't tend to act sick until they are very sick. Please see a vet as soon as possible.

No, it's unlikely it is from eating dog food.
Reply:I hope it was not! Good luck to all of you! Report Abuse

Reply:It is doubtful that dog food would upset your cat's stomach. For the most part, dog and cat food is basically the same. The only difference is that different vitamins are added because the animals have different nutrient needs. His bloody stool is more likely from something else. His stomach could be upset from eating the flower (many plants are poisonous to cats, so be careful,) having a little constipation, etc. Sometimes, a cat will have one instance with a little blood and it doesn't happen again. Just keep an eye on his litter habits for a few days. If it continues, go to the vet ASAP because a cat's health problems can become very serious very quickly.
Reply:keep a close watch on what he eats, restrict his diet
Reply:He could. Changes in diet can affect the digestive system and could cause stomach upset. The blood could have just been from the irritated intestines or the irritation of the rectum from the diarrhea.

Wait and see if he has any other bouts of diarrhea. If he does, then you'll have to call the vet and let them know. Diarrhea that lasts more than 24 hours can be dangerous as it can lead to dehydration, which causes its own problems.
Reply:the cat can eat the dogs food it's ok, but what ever was in the food or maybe the flower didn't agree with the cats stomach and unless it's alot of blood i wouldn't worry about it.
Reply:This sounds like Coccidiosis (COK sid ee o sis) to me. I have had a cat with it before. In a younger or weakened animal, it can be quite serious. I am assuming you haven't had this cat long if you haven't had it neutered yet. It is a pretty common thing in strays or animals from the animal shelter. Your dog can get it too by the way. I would see a vet immediately.
Reply:doubtful
Reply:If the poop has only one drop of blood, did it come from passing something big? If not and it was only the runs, I would call the vet. They won't charge you for the call and you would get expert advice. I am on a first name basis with all of the vet techs at my vet. They know when they see my number on caller ID that I have another cat question. It is better that they know me because they remember the pets and have knowledge that i cannot find any where else. I would worry about the plant that was eaten more than the dog food. Most plants are poison to cats.
Reply:A cat is more likely to get a canine butt-whooping for stealing dog food. Tell your kitty to back off and let the real pet eat.
Reply:Dog food won't have any negative effects on a cat unless the cat is allergic to any of it's contents or if fed as the primary diet (since dog food doesn't provide adequate nutrition for cats).

Cats are experts at hiding their pain, so please don't ever assume that nothing is wrong just because kitty doesn't "act" sick. You should always take your kitty to the vet if you suspect that he may have eaten something he shouldn't have unless you know without a doubt that it isn't poisonous to cats and that your cat doesn't have an allergy to the item or it's contents.

Kitty diarrhea can be caused by: stomach or intestinal viruses, intestinal parasites, eating irritating materials, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, food allergies, Neoplasia, Hyperthyroidism, chronic bacterial or fungal infections, loss of pancreatic function, disorders of the small or large intestines, and certain systemic diseases such as liver, kidney, and heart diseases. It's very important to take kitty to the vet to determine the cause(s). How to treat the diarrhea depends largely upon the cause(s) of the diarrhea. And treatment is absolutely necessary even in minor cases of diarrhea, because it can cause the following symptoms: vomiting, dehydration, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, high fever, lethargy, etc..., and may even result in death. Likewise, some of the bacterial and parasitic causes of diarrhea are infectious to humans.

Bloody stools can be caused by: food allergies, infection, trauma, Inflammatory Bowel Disease or other inflammation, parasites, cancer of colon or rectum area, foreign material in colon or rectum, disease of the anal sacs, constipation, Pseudocoprostasis (condition in which stool and matted hair block the exit of the bowels or the anus... tissues may bleed secondary to infection and pressure on tissues). Bloody stools are abnormal. Vet attention is necessary, because, while some causes are easily dealt with, some causes are progressive.
Reply:eating dog food will never hurt your cat but as for the blood in it's stool have the vet check for works.do not give cats milk this will make them have the diahrea.maybe it just didn't agree with him but check for works some time when a cat always poops blood they might have cancer.and here is a helpfull tip cat digest only 40% of there food.and if you let him go out grass will do that too if he eats to much
