I'm getting some work done tomorrow and this will leave bare soil. I'd like to plant something there that will be interesting without growing too high (less than a foot) and will flower for a good part of the year. What can i plant about now or is it too late? If so, what and when do I plant? Doesn't have to be flowers. Ferns would be nice too.
What to plant in my Scottish front garden now?
Ferns are lovely, but they need a shady, damp position. Rose of Sharon (or Hypericum to give it it's proper name) is a great ground cover plant, has pretty yellow flowers on for most of the summer and spreads like mad. I live in Drumnadrochit near Loch Ness and it grows well in my garden so I know that it is fine in extreme cold conditions.
A trip to a garden centre or old fashioned nursery might help you to decide what to plant. Usually they are very helpful and if you want enough of something, might give you a discount.

Reply:Be careful, if you make a terriffic job of it and it is aesthetically pleasing, Gordon Brown will get to hear of it and he will want to "wet his beak". Throw a few old fridges and bike frames in, just to be on the safe side.
Reply:If you want time to think out permanent plantings more thoroughly, you might consider "flowering" kale/cabbage --
good color till a very hard freeze, and then they go away, leaving you with a clean slate to start over next spring.
